Dear Fellow Seeker,
My name is Anthony James, and I'm the President and Founder of ThaiMassage.Com, a top 5 Thai Massage and Massage therapy web site on Google, Yahoo, Altavista, Askjeeves, MSN, AOL and Hotbot.

I understand that the amount of resources available to help you improve your practice and life is huge. I also know that the process of finding the best book, best speaker, best seminar, and best program to improve your practice and life is often a confusing, time consuming and frequently discouraging process. I also understand how expensive it can be. The proliferation of thai massage, massage therapy and yoga education and training materials is amazing.
This realization inspired me to take on a mission. My mission was to create a simple, easy to read, accessible and comprehensive resources, that provided clear information on the best methods and techniques you can easily learn.
This resource had to answer several important questions:
Thai Massage for Multiple Therapists is a unique and powerful form of traditionally based massage technique.
What is "Thai Yoga and Massage"?
Thai Massage, "the practical expression of loving kindness", can be traced through Thailand's history, more than 1000 years to the Ayurvedic teachings of Atreya and the Vasrayana or Diamond Healing lineage of Tibet.
Jivaka or Shivago Komalaboat, the patron saint of Tibetan Medicine is credited with spreading Tibetan Medicine to the Thai Sangha, the Buddhist order of monks and nuns. They found the medicine healing and restorative. It relieved many of their aches and pains and enabled them to sit long hours deep in meditation.
The monks and nuns cherished the teachings of Shivago which came to be known as Traditional Thai Medical Massage, called 'nuat phaen boran thai', literally means 'the old Thai way of healing with the hands'. The monks, supported by Thai royalty, preserved the teachings. They passed them down from one generation to the next in the form of an oral tradition. Each master in turn would personally transmit and pass on the lineage and knowledge to the next generation in a solemn ceremony. Years of intense, disciplined, practice and meditation were required in all of the healing methods.
The four principle methods used in traditional Vedic (Yoga derived) healing by the Thai monks are Wai Khruu (prayers and spiritual practice for mental health ), Herbs, Diet, and Laying On of Hands.
These remarkable teachings regarding restoration and maintenance of life have now been passed on to this generation. SomaVeda Thai Massage incorporates elements of mindfulness, gentle rocking, deep stretching and rhythmic compression to create a singular healing experience. This work, as it brings fundamental elements and energy into harmony; creates wholeness of mind, body and spirit, in the client and the practitioner as well.
How was the Fundamental's of SomaVeda Thai Yoga and Massage course developed?
In the early 1980's, when I first began to introduce the concepts and practices of Thai Yoga and Massage to the western world in Atlanta, Georgia, USA... There were no "levels" and the first course or "introductory" course for new practitioners was 6 months long! Hehe, I found out quickly that most Westerners will not commit to a 6 month training in anything they do not know of or have some familiarity with. My dilemma was that I really wanted to pass on this incredible work in an authentic and representative way... true to the honor bestowed upon me as one of the very first non-thai instructors to be formally recognized as a true teacher. My instructors had spent literally their whole lives in preserving the heritage of their schools and I was committed to do the same in the west. So what to do? Traditional training was based on long periods of study, up to 4 years or 12 semesters of basic training. How to give this information to western students with out selling it short? Ok, Grand Master Phaa Khruu Samaii Mesamarn, my professor at Buddhai Sawan Institute in Nongkam told me that it was no accident that I was "Not Thai"! He said, "It is your job to translate and convey this work in a manner suitable for the western students". Of course the problem was that no one had ever done this previously and I had no Thai models to follow.
The solution came from my martial arts back ground, as a Black Belt is American Karate, I had studied with world champions of Karate such as Bill Wallace, Joe Lewis, Chuck Norris, Joe Corley, Danny Inosanto, Francis Fong and others and in the martial arts world a system of belts had been devised a a way to break down complex systems for western students. Ah Ha! I would do the same for the Thai Massage, but decided to call it levels instead of "belts".
(Side Bar, we did actually experiment with the "Belt ranking" for students of Thai Massage in Thailand in 1983/ 1984 and decided that it was too "Martial" and dropped it there!)
So! levels it is! Since introducing this concept, "Level's" are now the standard way of teaching foreign or non thai students the traditions of Thai Massage both here in the US and in Thailand!
Back to this course...
I had to devise an introductory experience that would ease students into this new world of Thai Massage and at the same time introduce a representative session that would rock! I came up with this course, which has now been taught to over 5000 students!
